The Importance of Being True to Yourself

When you start off as a writer, it is easy to let others make decisions for you and to tell you what to do and not do. After all, since you are beginning your writing career, you feel like a novice and you want to do the best that you can and be the best that you can as soon as you can. One of the most important things that you can do for yourself as a writer is to be true to yourself. Make sure that you know exactly what you want to write. If you are unsure about what you want to write, it is important for you to take stock of YOUR likes and dislikes. Maybe examine your hobbies. What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? What book and magazine titles are you drawn to when you go to the bookstore? By answering these questions, you will become acutely aware of what you are interested in. Then you could start researching in these different areas and determining what you topics really fascinate you. This way, you will be writing about what YOU want to write about and now what someone else is telling you to write about. And that is emancipation at its best! But, more importantly, you can tailor your writing to your temperament and to your hobbies and goals. And it is so important that you write about what YOU like. Don’t be manipulated by other individuals, even if they are supposed experts, to write about things that you aren’t interested in. Make sure that what you write about you are passionate about! ~ Happy writing! ~ Irene
