Prioritize Your Goals

Many writers want to achieve way too much. And that’s okay, and perhaps even praiseworthy, from time to time. However, writers must also learn to choose and prioritize their goals in order to be most successful. In other words, they must choose which goals they will work towards first, and stick to their plans. It can be difficult to prioritize because writers usually want to do so much. Some writers believe the more they do, the more successful they will be. But this is far from the case. In fact, the more we do, the less successful we will be because we will be scattered. One of the best ways to prioritize your writing goals is to write down all your goals. Just list everything you want to accomplish. Then go back over your list and categorize your goals. For instance, if you want to write a few nonfiction articles and work on planning a book for the next month, highlight those different categories using different colour highlighters. One way of doing this is to use pink or blue highlighter or colour ink for your book and yellow or orange highlighter or in colour for your articles. This will give you a visual representation of what you need done. Lastly, decide which writing tasks or goals you will work on first, and write them down on a separate sheet of paper. Type your writing tasks up and tack them above your computer. Then take out your weekly planner and write which of your three writing goals you’ll focus on each day. Make sure you follow your planned writing tasks every day for a month. Then watch your success and confidences soar. Try it! Irene S. Roth Freelance Writer Specialist for Teens and Tweens
