It can be hard to strike the right balance between solitude and social interaction. Yet balancing inner with outer is an important aspect of being a fulfilling writer. We need both to be most successful. In fact, I believe solitude is one of the most important things for our creativity to flourish.
Here are a few ways to ensure you balance solitude with creativity:
- Set specific times for writing and follow them with social activity. Try to stick to these times. This way, you can give space to both aspects of the creative process.
- You can incorporate social elements into your writing routine. You can join a writing group where you write with people on zoom or ask for feedback on your work. These are great ways of staying connected as you write.
- You can integrate small social activities at the end of the week so that you can write freely during the week and yet still have a creative output – times where you write.
- Decide how much social-ness you need. Different writers require varying times for solitude. For example, I require total solitude when I write. If you don’t you could write in a coffee shop or library. These can be inspiring and nice place for some people to write. I can’t write in coffee shops. But if you can, go for it. It can give you the right kind of buzz and solitude.
Thus, writing is a solitary journey. But it need not limit or restrict you from other writers and the world. Solitude has its many perks for writers, especially writing as a state of flow. Also, good writing requires contemplation, which can best be achieved through solitude. Get to know yourself and what you need.
