We tend to have a lot of papers and books over the place in our office or study. Over time, they can accumulate and make our writing space cluttered and unmanageable.
Therefore, it’s important for us to clear our space daily so that when we come into our study to write it can be a place that’s inviting and we don’t waste time looking for the files that should have been out in a prominent space before we left our computer the night before.
Here are a few ways to make sure that you declutter your physical space for optimal success as a writer.
- Clear Unnecessary Papers – Sort through papers and either file, shred, or recycle anything you don’t need. If you do this regularly, it should take more than 10 minutes at the end of your day.
- Organize Stationery – Gather pens, markers, and supplies, keeping only essentials in a container. Your desk and space will look neat and tidy if you do this regularly.
- Limit Desk Decor – Remove excess decorations, leaving just one or two items that inspire or calm you. Many writers have a lot of knickknacks in their writing space. It’s important to declutter them as much as possible.
- Tidy Cables and Electronics – Untangle and organize charging cables and devices to prevent clutter. There’s nothing more cluttering than cords that aren’t supposed to be out in the open. Not only can we trip, but our space also looks untidy.
- Wipe Down Surfaces – Clean your desk surface with a cloth to create a fresh, inviting workspace. Dust and grime are also considered clutter. So, be sure to dust your study as often as possible.
- Designate a ‘To-Do’ Tray – Use a tray or folder for important items to tackle later, preventing random stacks. That way, you’ll know where to go to get started the next day.
- Use Drawer Organizers – Arrange items in desk drawers to keep the surface clear and organized. This can help a lot to make sure that things go in the places that they’re supposed to be. That way, you’ll be able to find things and not misplace things often.
- Add a Touch of Nature – Keep a small plant or natural element to create a calming, uncluttered atmosphere. This can help oxygenate your study and give you incentive to write and be successful.
A clean and intentional workspace can make it easier to focus and feel motivated when you start writing. Try incorporating the tips above to your study. Not only will you work more efficiently. But you’ll feel better.
